What to Wear for Senior Portraits

FILED IN: for clients, tips

I was compiling a list of hints, tips, and tricks for my 2013 senior models when I decided that I should share this with the world, because I’m just that nice. So here it is, my guide for dressing for your senior portraits…

Let’s start with some boring tips…

1. Know your yearbook’s requirements.
Most school yearbooks have a set of guidelines they require pictures to meet before they’re used in the yearbook. Make sure you know these guidelines and communicate them to your photographer.

2. Cover your bases.
You’ll want to have a variety of outfits lined up for your senior pictures. Most studios and photographers charge by the outfit or limit them (I don’t because I’m obsessed with clothes). But if you are limited to a certain number or would like to keep it simple for your own sanity, make sure you have at least one formal outfit in the mix. Guys, this doesn’t have to mean a three piece suit and girls, this doesn’t have to be your prom dress. But have one nice outfit that grandma would approve of. After your formal outfit add one that is quintessentially YOU. Whatever your style is. If you have more choices make sure your interests are covered as well. Sports, clubs, band, and hobbies are a big part of High School (girls, your prom dress would be a great choice in this category). It’s not cheesy to have your pictures reflect that.

3. Try to avoid giant labels.
Now I am the biggest offender of this, one of my favorite Senior Pictures is in a hoodie that says HOLLISTER in giant letters across the front. But for the most part, try to avoid obvious product placement. Stick to solid colors and unidentifiable clothes for a more timeless look that will make your pictures more relevant in years to come.

4. Do your research.
Before you run off and have your pictures taken, figure out what you like. Check out other peoples’ senior pictures, read some magazines, or create a Pinterest board. Find an outfit that you really like and recreate it with stuff you already have. Or if you just need a reason to shop, you can recreate some pretty killer looks for relatively cheap through H&M or Forever 21. The stores are a little hectic but finding a bargain in the middle of those messy racks is totally worth it.

Now on to some things that I can’t get enough of this year…

1. Bold prints, stripes, and patterns

2. High waisted shorts or skirts (sorry guys, this one is only for the girls)

3. Cardigans, blazers, and jackets

4. Belts and scarves

5. Hats
